Types of Engineering

The practical activity of an engineer covers in our time a very vast area of human knowledge. Thus, the knowledge of the outstanding engineer and the greatest scientist of the ancient world, Archimedes, was enough to create throwing machines alone that amazed the imagination of many people. At present, a combination of efforts of many talented scientists and outstanding engineers, led by the outstanding engineer of our era, academicians S.P., has been required. Korolev to solve the modern problem of throwing - the task of "throwing" into space an artificial Earth satellite.

A modern engineer for his engineering activities would not have had all the knowledge of Archimedes, Leonardo da Vinci and A.S. Popov combined. However, this does not mean that any engineer of our time can be compared in technical creativity with any of the above. The technical creativity of the engineer of each social formation uses the experience and achievements of its predecessors as the foundation on which everyone builds his own “building”.

To solve the problem of creating a modern technical facility, the efforts of dozens of engineers of various specialties are required. What caused the need to unite the efforts of so many people?

The inventor of antiquity personally implemented all the stages of the innovation cycle, with his own hands he objectified his own idea. The engineer of an industrial society has many faces. The division of engineering labor led to the creation of fairly separate internal professional groups. On each branch of engineering activity, a specialist must have specific knowledge and practical skills.

Before proceeding with the direct production of technical objects, they must first be constructed. This task includes: choosing a principle of operation, developing a kinematic scheme of a design, choosing a scheme for interaction of certain units, choosing suitable materials and parts, calculating and choosing optimal operating modes for individual units and the entire structure as a whole, layout and external design of a product, development of a technical design of a product .

Design - an independent engineering task related to the types of engineering activity and requiring specific knowledge and skills. Engineers involved in solving this specific problem are called design engineers.

An object designed by a design engineer must be embodied in metal, wood, concrete, and other material. In other words, if the designer answered the question of what needs to be done, then someone should answer the question of how to do it.

For the manufacture of the same object, various technological methods and operations can be used: casting or forging, pressing or turning, gluing or sewing, chemical or laser processing of materials and parts. The choice of technological operations significantly affects production efficiency and product quality. One technology accelerates production, another - ensures quality, a third - allows you to get a cheaper product, and a fourth - increases reliability and reliability. To ensure the selection of the optimal technology for a given specific production, and if there is none, then to develop it is the task of a process engineer. The main task for a process engineer is strict control over compliance with the technological regime of production, its improvement and development.

The technologist is, as it were, between the machine and the object of its influence and, therefore, must synthesize them in their activities in such a way as to result in a specific product, object or product with the form, properties and qualities pre-programmed by the designer.

To perform its functions, the technologist must know perfectly: the capabilities of individual machines, assemblies (the path of knowledge of which passes through deciphering the intricacies of the technological process); features of raw materials and the possibility of processing them on machines (origin, geometric parameters, as well as a set of physical, chemical and mechanical properties); the production process of obtaining a given product, semi-finished product, material (product) at all transitions and the influence exerted by the process on the initial properties of raw materials.

However, the development and manufacture of a technical object requires ensuring its normal functioning. For this, it is necessary to correctly assess the technical condition of the facility, observe the operating modes of the nodes and mechanisms, timely carry out a set of preventive measures and routine maintenance to prevent premature wear and failure in its operation. In the event of a failure in the operation of the products, one must be able to correctly identify the defect and arrange repairs. The technical engineer is responsible for solving these technical issues.

The success of engineering development depends entirely on the state of research activities in society. Production cannot stand still. Its development is aimed at continuous improvement of product quality and its quantitative growth. The solution to these problems, and consequently, successes in the development of engineering is possible only on the basis of further scientific achievements. The ultimate goal of scientific research in engineering is the development of methods for calculating and optimizing product parameters, monitoring their characteristics, increasing efficiency and reliability at the stages of design, production and technical operation. Researchers are engaged in the solution of these problems.

In world practice, the role of an engineer as a production organizer is known and widespread. Being the technical leader of the production team, the engineer must ensure not only the efficient use of technical means, raw materials, but also the production personnel. This function is performed by managerial engineers (managers).

Thus, in engineering, engineers should distinguish between several profiles

- design engineer;

- process engineer;

- operating engineer;

- research engineer;

- managerial engineer (manager);

- engineer-economist;

- environmental engineer;

- metrology engineer;

- information engineer;

-engineer solving mathematical support problems for automated control systems, etc.
